I’m going to preface this with saying that the reason I list the receiving blankets as “officially” 30 x 30 is because we all know how much they shrink after repeated usage and they often aren’t perfectly square. I sized the pieces to allow for some variation so you shouldn’t come up short handed! Another perk to doing it this way is that I was able to pick which corners to cut and keep so I was able to avoid most of the staining. However, even the stained pieces tend to “blend” into the overall business of the pattern. I’d love to see pictures of the finished quilts!

Materials:

  • 8-10 Receiving Blankets (mine were “officially” 30 x 30)
  • Sewing materials (thread, needles, etc)
  • Cutting materials (rotary blade, self-healing cutting mat, etc)

Directions:

  1. Iron all the blankets to ensure the pieces are cut accurately
  2. Cut the blankets into the correct pieces. Each blanket should make a 16 x 16, two 8 x 16, and an 8 x 8 piece (see diagram here)
  3. Lay out all the pieces on the floor to determine the pattern you’d like to use (suggested layout here)
  4. Starting with Section 1 sew A and B together right-sides facing using 1/2 inch seams (see here)
  5. Press the seams
  6. Sew D and C together right-sides facing (see here)
  7. Press the seams
  8. Sew A/B and D/C together right-sides facing (see here)
  9. Press the seams
  10. Repeat steps 4-9 for Section 2, 3, and 4 (leaving you with 4 large squares)
  11. Sew Section 1 and Section 2 together right-sides facing
  12. Press the seams
  13. Sew Section 3 and Section 4 together right-sides facing
  14. Press the seams
  15. Sew Section 1/Section 2 and Section 3/Section 4 together right-sides facing
  16. Press the seams
  17. If you are using a “border” you can attach it to the outer edge at this time. The example used a 2 inch wide border
  18. Repeat steps 3-17 for side 2
  19. Sew side 1 and side 2 together right-sides facing leaving an 8 inch hole to turn the project inside out
