I’m a big fan of trying to cut out junk food if at all possible for my toddler. His 3rd birthday came around and I needed a crafty way to replace the birthday cake with a healthier option. I decided to have a “Pizza Planet” pizza to stick with the Toy Story theme. Overall, the pizza was a hit and with a bit of time it actually looked fairly realistic. I was even able to ask a local pizza parlor for a box which added to the authenticity. Couple of notes with this one is that you are working with fresh fruit so you can’t prep it very far in advance. You should also take into consideration the season of the year when you make it because a few of the original fruits I had intended to use were out of season and unavailable. The amounts I have listed made two 10 inch “pizzas”.

  • 1 Whole Watermelon (to look like crust with sauce)
  • 2 Red Apples (to look like cheese and red onion)
  • 1 pint Blueberries (to look like black olives)
  • 1 small can Pineapple Chunks (to look like pineapple)
  • 2 Fruit Leather Rolls (to look like ham)
  • 2 or 3 cups Sprite

  1. Cut watermelon discs (about 1/2-3/4 inch thick)
  2. Wash the blueberries and apples
  3. Grate the peel portion of the apple only (the red skin looks like bacon or red onion)
  4. Place grated peel in a bowl covered in Sprite for 10-15 minutes
(The Sprite helps prevent the apple from browning but doesn’t change the taste)
  5. Grate the apple (white portion) of the apple
  6. Place grated peel in a different bowl covered in Sprite for 10-15 minutes
  7. Slice the ends from the blueberries and then slice the remaining portion
  8. Drain the pineapple chunks
  9. Drain the grated apple and grated apple peel
  10. Assemble!
    1. Watermelon slices as the crust with sauce
    2. Grated apple (the white part) to look like mozzarella cheese
    3. Fruit leather, pineapple, blueberries, and apple peel as the toppings
  11. Cut into pizza slices and serve
